Introducing DP12
DP version 12 delivers exciting new features like immersive mixing in Dolby Atmos®, AI-powered stem separation, the new Arrangement Strip, plus dozens of workflow enhancements requested by DP users.
Immersive Sound
Mix, Render and Export in Dolby Atmos®
Dolby Atmos has transformed how entertainment is created and experienced, transporting you into a spatial sound experience that draws you in deeper, allowing you hear more and feel more. DP12 gives you all the tools you need to mix, render and deliver your spatialized mixes in Dolby Atmos. Whether you’re creating an immersive version of your song for streaming platforms like Apple Music® or Tidal®, or you’re mixing 3D sound, dialog, and music for an indie film, DP12 will inspire you, from initial concept to polished mix.
Dolby Atmos 3D Panner
Surround your audience with 128 channels
Dolby Atmos frees you from conventional, channel-based surround formats by allowing you to freely place up to 128 channels anywhere within the 3D sound field, and then deploy your mix to any desired speaker configuration — including a binaural (3D) headphone mix that can be heard on any standard pair of headphones (no surround speakers needed). Place sounds, effects, instruments, dialog or any audio source with precision and elevation. Move sounds throughout the sound field with DP12’s powerful and familiar mix automation features. DP12 will inspire you as you explore the possibilities of the immersive sound experience.
Dolby Atmos Renderer
Mix and render in real time, then export a Dolby Atmos ADM file
In Digital Performer, the Dolby Atmos Renderer is built-in: you can mix in real time, driven by your creativity. Then, when you’re ready to deliver your polished mix, you can export a Dolby Atmos ADM file for delivery to spatial streaming services, the mix stage, or other Dolby Atmos-equipped studios. ADM files exported from DP can be imported into the Dolby Renderer app (sold separately), if you prefer to use it for external rendering and export. Either way, your Dolby Atmos workflow is complete, from end to end. The world of immersive mixing awaits…
Stem Separation
AI-powered stem separation: a Holy Grail realised
DP12’s new Stem Separation feature is nothing short of magic: take an original mix, perhaps a favourite song, and Stem Separation can break it out into individual instrument tracks: drums, bass, vocals, guitar — and even strings and brass. From there, you can do anything you want with the resulting tracks: remix them, mash them up… the sky’s the limit. If you want to practice your instrument, mute that track and play along with the rest of the mix. Stem Separation unleashes creative possibilities with original material, from classic tracks to today’s latest hits.
Arrangement Strip
Re-arrange your song in seconds with the new Arrangement Strip
You’ve got an Intro, Verse, Chorus and Bridge. Now you want to arrange it. With the new Arrangement Strip, you can arrange in seconds. Just drag each section’s colored bar to reorder the sections across all tracks. Option/Alt-drag to duplicate. Want to try variations? Just drag again. Duplicate, move, re-order, snip and delete sections with ease. Simple. Powerful. Inspiring.
Track Presets
Create, Save and Recall Track Presets
A track preset can include any track settings you wish, from I/O and EQ settings to plug-in chains. Drag & drop presets from the Content Browser to apply them to existing tracks or create new tracks from them. DP12 provides dozens of presets to get you started with vocals, drums, bass, guitar and many other instruments. Or create and recall your own presets.
Keyboard Customization: Other DAWs
Do you have familiarity with Pro Tools, Cubase, Nuendo, Logic or Live? You can use their key commands in Digital Performer. Just go to the commands window and import their command keyset from the mini- menu. Now your computer keyboard will respond just like it does in the other DAW, to help you feel more comfortable and speed your workflow.
Keyboard Customisation: Keysets
Keysets let you quickly switch among different key binding sets as you work, depending on the specific task at hand. For example, you might create keysets that help you work faster while you are editing, spotting to picture, or tracking in the studio. You can set up custom keysets for each task and then quickly switch between them. Keysets work together with your regular key bindings, acting as a subset you can enable and disable quickly.
Music Notation
Music score interchange with MusicXML import and export
Digital Performer can now import MusicXML files, as well as export them. This allows for complete, round- trip interchange with 3rd-party music notation software applications, such as Dorico™, Sibelius™ and MuseScore™. Drag MusicXML files into the Chunks list or import them using File > Import. The import process supports all DP features that export as MusicXML, including dynamics, articulations, measure repeats, text and more.
Tags
Find exactly what you’re looking for FAST
Tags serve as searchable keywords for tracks and chunks. You can create as many tags as you wish and assign them as desired to tracks and chunks. You can then use tags for track and chunk searching and sorting. Tags appear throughout DP where tracks and chunks are listed, such as in the Track Selector (where they can be shown or hidden). If your orchestral score template has hundreds of tracks and dozens of chunks, tags will become an essential tool to speed your workflow.
Enhanced Search
Tracks and Chunks
The Search boxes in the Track List and Chunks List now feature a menu allowing you to search for names, tags, comment text, or any combination of the three.
Enhanced Search
Preferences
Digital Performer is the most customisable and configurable DAW. You can now quickly find the preference you are looking for with the Search box in the Preferences window.
Enhanced Search
Key bindings
You can now search for commands by key binding or MIDI event. This makes it easy to find which command is assigned to a particular key or MIDI event.
Track Freeze
Enhanced Track Freeze and Flatten
For audio tracks or instrument tracks with a heavy processing load from plug-ins or the instrument itself, freezing the track is a great way to free up your computer’s processing resources. Freezing also lets you temporarily lock down a track from any changes as you work. In DP12, audio tracks and instrument tracks can now be frozen and unfrozen with one click in the Track List FRZ (Freeze) column. The original track itself freezes. (No separate track is created.) From there, you can unfreeze or permanently flatten the track (which is undoable). Frozen tracks can continue to be mixed. Editing a frozen track unfreezes it. Freezing and unfreezing is now quicker and easier than ever.
MIDI Controller Management
Control Your MIDI Controllers
Do you use multiple external MIDI controller devices in your studio? The new Main MIDI Controller menu in the Control Panel allows you to designate one controller, or multiple controllers, as your primary MIDI input device(s). Digital Performer then follows this setting for the MIDI input assignments for MIDI tracks, either in regular Record mode or Multi Record, making it easier to manage MIDI input and recording and filter out unwanted MIDI data from other devices.
Workflow
Batch renaming
Select multiple tracks or soundbites, right-click and choose Rename Tracks or Rename Soundbites to rename in one operation.
Workflow
Fade/Crossfade Presets
You can now save and recall custom presets for fades and crossfades. You can also drag and drop them from the Content Browser.
Workflow
Enhanced AAF/OMF Support
Enhanced AAF and OMF compatibility with newer projects generated under the most recent standard, improved partial recovery.
UI Enhancements
Hover Effects
DP12 feels more reactive and dynamic, with hover effects and animations when navigating the interface. These visual enhancements can be reduced or disabled using a new setting in Preferences > Display > Appearance.
Freely resizable counter
The Large Counter window can now be resized both vertically and horizontally. Text in the window can also be independently resized (with respect to the window).
Enhanced track settings
The track settings pane in the Sequence Editor now intelligently resizes to fill the space depending on the panel width/track height.
Dynamic feedback while dragging
DP12 now displays detailed information about a drag operation in the Sequence Editor while dragging.
Enhanced Drag & Drop
Precise Targeting and Feedback
When dropping external audio files or standard MIDI files (SMFs) into the timeline of the Track Overview or Sequence Editor, you can target an existing track, or the space between tracks, which creates a new track (or multiple tracks) between them. You can also target a specific location in the timeline, as indicated by an outlined box as you drag. When dropping multiple audio files, or multi-channel SMFs, onto an existing track, options are provided for where to place the multiple files or tracks. These options can be saved as a preference. As always, if you drop audio files into the Track List, they jump to their original timestamp, if any.
Drop chunks into another sequence timeline
You can now drag a sequence chunk into the timeline of another sequence to add it to the target sequence. An option is provided to merge tracks with the same names, if any.
In-line Help
Tutorials
The Tutorials tab (from the Help menu) provides an excellent, interactive experience for learning Digital Performer quickly. Each section can be completed in 10-20 minutes, and provides clear, concise explanations, screenshots and short videos, from a introductory overview to exporting a final mix.
Flyover Help
Help is on the way! The Flyover Help window (Help menu) provides a brief description of user interface elements when you hover the cursor over them. Flyover Help is a great way to explore Digital Performer and quickly familiarize (or re-familiarize) yourself with its many features, for new and seasoned users alike!
